A progenitor of the movement that came to be called Arts and Crafts, by the 1890s he was a legend throughout the world. His sensibility dramatically influenced typography, printing, and interior design.

William Seltzer Rice (18731963) was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Northern California in 1900, when the regions Arts & Crafts movement was flowering. A talented and prolific watercolorist, Rice taught at various schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oaklanda center for the movement.
